Egypt forward Mostafa Zico and coach Hossam Hassan criticised the refereeing decisions after their side’s dramatic 3–2 defeat against Argentina in the FIFA World Cup last-16 clash on Tuesday.
Egypt were leading 2–0 with only 11 minutes remaining, but Argentina scored three late goals to complete a remarkable comeback and win the game. After the match, the Egyptian camp alleged bias in the refereeing.
In a video shared by BBC, Zico said: “The referee was really not fair, not fair. The referee was not fair. The injustice was clear. We did a good job in the early stages of the match, but there was unfairness right from the start. A 2–0 lead isn’t enough to beat Argentina. It’s clear that this tournament has been fixed, but God is sufficient for us.”
Egypt’s goal from Mostafa Zico was ruled out after a VAR review found a foul in the build-up. The team also appealed for a penalty after Hamdy Fathy appeared to have been fouled inside the box. Later, Argentina scored the winning goal in stoppage time.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Hassan said he would not watch the rest of the tournament because of what happened against Argentina.
“I’m going home and won’t be watching any more games from the tournament,” he said. “What happened to us wasn’t fair. We should have had a penalty, a goal was disallowed, and I don’t know why it was disallowed.”
Argentina will now face Switzerland in the quarter-finals on Sunday at Kansas City Stadium.
